GOALS’ annual summer camp provides children in rural and impoverished areas with athletic, educational, and dynamic activities in addition to basic soccer equipment and hot meals. For most children, this is the first time they are able to participate in recreational programs. GOALS’ summer camp is the only free program for Haitian children in the areas of operation.
In 2010, GOALS’ launched its free summer camp in Destra, a rural fishing village in Leogane, Haiti. For the past two summers, GOALS has registered 120 boys and girls from ages 7-18. Daily activities include soccer practice, song and dance, educational seminars, community service, and a hot lunch. GOALS’ camp counselors and staff are paid. The Dream Team scholarship recipients serve as volunteers.
Summer camp is especially effective at involving girls in soccer for the first time, as well as engaging teenagers in community service and education activities. GOALS is currently working to develop summer camps in other Leogane communities.
